Re Laurino - Hotel Laurin a Santa Margherita Ligure

One of the most beautiful legends in South Tyrol tells:

“Once upon a time, where today there are only rocks and stones, there was a beautiful rose garden that belonged to Laurin, King of the Dwarves. One day, thanks to a magic hood that made him invisible, he carried off Similde, the King’s daughter. Many knights took up the chase and when they saw the rose garden in full bloom they knew where to look for Similde. One of them managed to grab the magic hood and make the King of the Dwarves reappear. Then a fierce battle took place and Laurin, in spite of his magic powers, was defeated by the knights.
King Laurin was captured and Similde married the bravest knight. But the King of the Dwarves managed to escape. When he got back to his mountains and saw his rose garden, he said: “These roses betrayed me; if the knights hadn’t seen them, they would never have come upon my mountain”.
Laurin was furious. He turned the whole rose garden into stone and cast a spell over it so that it couldn’t be seen by day or by night.
But he forgot about dusk. That is why we can still gaze in wonder at the rose garden as the last rays of sun shine on it just before twilight.
